NWOBHM Legends?Hi
Just a few things I've been thinking about recently concerning the Head...
Do any of you guys get fed up with hearing Diamond Head described as 'New Wave British Heavy Metal Legends' all the time?... Personally I think the band should try to shake off the tag and pursue a more modern audience if they expect to continue their career over the coming years.
Besides, no offence to Nick, Karl, Eddie and Abbz (because I have ultimate respect for those guys!) but Brian is strictly the only 'NWOBHM Legend' left in the band (despite my hatred for that phrase!!)
With Nick, the band have taken their music to new levels, creating a sound which in my opinion is quite different to the old Diamond Head style. I think the tag 'NWOBHM Legends' in fact puts some people off DH, as it may imply to some that DH are a band of old farts simply living off past glory, something which they are clearly not!
I also think the guys should consider trying to get some tour support slots with more modern metal bands, this will expose them to younger audiences and probably help there popularity and record sales.
Basically guys I am not saying that Diamond Head should abandon their roots, but I am of the opinion that if they fail to appeal to a wider audience then they will be confining the band to the 'small time' for the rest of its life.... Diamond Head are a fucking amazing band and I hate to see them so unappreciated
Opinions?

Thats a well structured point there Jack.
Very much a half full or half empty point too, makes you think and I like a good thinking!
I'm off in a minute so can't answer as fully as I would like to, but gotta say something or it will bug me all weekend!
It's a great history they have. Must not forget though, they still are making history.
I don't think the NWOBHM tag should be dropped, however, I do think it should be diluted a little. I think thats something the band have in mind too. It was great to see them on the Tesla slot and that should open some more doors to.
Saying that, after hearing This Planet and me....that is *THE* track to get them back on the map
Have a great weekend all

Hmmm ... at first I wasn’t going to say anything at all. I feel there’s a few points I don’t think I can presume to comment upon for various reasons ... But I will say a couple of things ...
Personally I don’t think a band is doing themselves or their fans any favors when they attempt to deny their past. Some of the bands I’m more impressed with currently, of the ones who have a “history”, are the ones who not only embrace their past but at the same time are still moving forward. I feel Diamond Head is doing a great job in this way. They appear to wear the NWOBHM tag proudly and don’t try to deny they were part of this musical “movement”. They still play really smoking renditions of their older and classic material at their shows and seriously I don’t think most people lucky enough to be in the audience are complaining. Diamond Head has also been putting out absolutely wonderful and relevant new material which is being accepted by the old and new fans alike.
I think a band’s history is important and should be respected by both the band members themselves and their fans and whoever else is listening to the band. What I’ve seen of bands who try to “reinvent” themselves and attempt to gain new fans by denying their past is miserable failure and on more than one level.
As for the rest, I’ll have to write it off as issues relating to this mysterious music BUSINESS which is not only taking place in another country from mine but an entirely different continent as well. I guess about all I can do is trust and hope Diamond Head is in more capable hands than they have been in the past who will help the band get the recognition and success they deserve, and selfishly I wish that it would ultimately translate into the band gaining an opportunity to play on my side of the pond. In the meantime I’m happy for every success and “victory” the band has, as they, like Lloydie says, “get back on the map”.

I don't think that Jack was suggesting dropping or denying thier history, but not placing so much emphasis on the matter. So instead of reminding everyone that they were once touted as the next Led Zep, telling people that actally they have a great new album out, something I'd like the band to push more in interviews.

Oh, definitely I feel from this point on interviews with the band and the entire focus of the band should be their current work, tour, new album, etc.
Over the past few years, while the band was "starting over" I think they needed to use their history as a starting point of reference but there is less need for it now.
What has irritated me, and I mean as something I've seen in other bands, is, as I stated before, those who completely deny their past or what they were (e.g. "NWOBHM").
Oddly, when I discuss DH with people and I'm trying to turn people on to the band the LAST thing I mention is the whole Metallica "connection" and other "history" like that. I tell people just listen to the music and then let them know where they can listen to DH songs or I go ahead and burn a CD with some stuff for them to check out.

You burn CD's!!!
Quick Hi Fi, behind you, I can see the feds coming now!
What your saying is very valid. It's cool the whole Metallica thing, and even the Dave M involvement on Truckin'. I do however think it is more flattery really, to have Metallica cover your songs must be a buzz. I love Metallica, see them live whenever possible, and for a band like Metallica to cover some songs is, what I class as, just a good recognition of how great the songs are. I hear Metallica are closing their live set at the moment with "Am I Evil"
It's funny though that no-one ever brings up the Iommi track. Anyway, steering back on the point, I think it is a good idea to just let people enjoy DH for being DH. If they then find out that Metallica did some songs etc then thats even better too as it means they did their research! Better still, those people that go out and get Kill 'em All and see Tatler and Harris in the credits and research from there...
Anyway, all this on the side, any publicity is good publicity.....so instead of us all writing huge threads here saying what sort of pubblicity we should be looking for so the group gets some more recognition....let's fire some e-mails off to local radio, rock magazines etc and get this word spread!
For example...

Just managed to get the guys added on this Italian website for July's Hot releases that will be coming out
Have a good one boys and girls

I knew I was going to get in trouble for that one!
Actually, one of my "converts" has gone on to buy a couple of DH CD's AND also bought the DVD! So I view that as a means to a GOOD end.
I'm still kind of new to this whole virtual street teaming thing ... but hopefully every little bit I do helps ... a little ...
