Friday Rock Show Sessions / Live At Reading

Friday Rock Show Sessions/Live at Reading

Not sure how many others have this one and of those who might comment. Also, being in the U.S.A. I’m not sure if this CD is just hard to find here or if it’s a harder one to get a hold of in general.

I had to do a lot of searching and went through more than a few eBay auctions (either missing out because I didn’t keep a close eye on it or getting outbid) before I finally got my hands on this one!

This is definitely one of my more favorite albums of the “compilation releases” in the Diamond Head discography, especially the Live at Reading (1982) portion. I find it’s a great “commuting” CD (driving to and from work). Brian is totally smoking, particularly on the “slower” songs, Borrowed Time and Don’t You Ever Leave Me, and I’ve had a few people who listened to this tell me they feel the same way. Sean sounds good too. I think overall you get a sense of the band being “ON”.

I’m going to do a little bit of the dreaded “comparison” thing but I can’t help this one. The band does In The Heat Of The Night in the Live At Reading portion. Then you also have the current band lineup doing the same song on the recent live CD and DVD. I seriously can’t choose one over the other. Both live versions are simply GREAT! I can listen to either one. I think it goes to show what a simply great song In The Heat Of The Night is in the first place and when you have great musicians performing it, it's magic.

I just have to mention this because it made me laugh ... I saw one review where the guy commented he found the sound of the audience distracting? Uh, HELLO? This is a LIVE recording? Of course the audience is going to be in the mix.

In the past I wasn’t a huge fan of most live albums. I prefer regular release studio albums and suppose I still do. In more recent times I’ve discovered a few live albums I find a lot of reasons to like.

Oh, this is funny ... I was trying to find that review and noticed that on amazon someone has a new “import” release for $189.95 USD. Right. Really I think if you’re just patient and check someplace like eBay regularly you can still get the CD for a much more reasonable price. I think I paid about $25 USD for mine. Sometimes it goes for more and sometimes you can get it for less. For Diamond Head I’ll go that high but a lot of other bands I wouldn’t LOL!

I know .. I know ... from what I’ve read the guys themselves don’t benefit as much from some of the compilation releases or from the profits the sellers make on used copies of the albums. But if it’s a “legit” release and I want to hear the music well ...

Anyway, strictly IMO but I think the Friday Rock Show Sessions/Live At Reading is a must-have after you’ve experienced the Diamond Head original album releases.
