Death & Progress

I think it’s only inevitable that there’s going to be a thread on each Diamond Head album here! Why not?

Ooop, reminds me I still need to comment on Canturbury!

Death & Progress is another one I’m seeing a lot of mixed opinions on. Again, I didn’t hear the album for the first time until a few years ago. In fact (I think) it’s the second Diamond Head album I bought, mainly because out of all the places I checked out at the time, and I wasn’t super web savvy about where to find CD’s online, all I found was one online seller who had a bunch of copies of Death & Progress, both the original release and the reissue. Probably due to pricing I bought the reissue. Anyway, what I started out trying to say is I didn’t know the album in the context of the time it was released or the expectations surrounding it, etc.

Like all albums I listen to and make any critical commentary on, I take an album at face value and don’t like to make comparisons. I like Death & Progress and think it’s a good solid rock album but it took me awhile to warm up to it and really get into it. And then, to make the dreaded comparison, I like it BUT not as well as the Diamond Head material released before Death & Progress.

I guess it’s easy to write off its commercial “failure” as being due to the times, with grunge, alternative, etc. becoming the more “popular” music but I also tend to think it’s true. Also I’m sure there was a lot of high expectations for this album, especially by the old school Diamond Head fans and Death & Progress might have seemed disappointing since it’s not as “heavy”. Ok, so it’s not heavy but as I said, I still think it’s a good album and I get it out from time to time and listen to it.

Ok D & P

I can sum this up in one word!....

Truckin' Very Happy

This is one of their best tracks in my opinion, but saying that I am a hardened Megadeth fan so I may be a little biased!!! Twisted Evil

True. Truckin' is probably one of the best tracks on Death & Progress.

Ever since the video was uploaded to You Tube and I've been checking it out, it's been one of the songs lately I can't seem to get out of my head!
sleeper

This album would make a classic Aerosmith record! The album is over produced. No idea what they were thinking with getting Tina Turner's producer to do the album.

The ablum would be fine if DH were an established rock band. However, this was meant to be their come back album and what they really needed was material that made them their name in the first place. They really needed AWBR style material. Something that had stong roots in old stuff as well as a real sence of the band moving forward.

However, if we were to look at it and not comparing it with previous DH material. It's an okay album. Got a few solid riffs in it and a couple of classics. My fav by far is paridise (that should be put back in the set). In fact I like it all, apart from the rehash of We Won't Be Back.

Guess I'd like more if it didn't have the Diamond Head name on it. Much like Megadeth's World Needs a Hero and Risk. Both awesome ablums, but not what you'd expect from Megs

Ok, admittedly, I have not been into the band as long as most of you guys have, but I am familiar with alot of their earlier stuff thanks to my DH 101 education by a fellow fan Wink I have to say though that I LOVE Death and Progress! I just finished listening to it and there isn't a song I don't like on this cd. Sure I suppose it may be more commercial sounding than their earlier stuff, but it is still awesome in it's own way. I think part of the reason this cd makes me happy too is because I COULD NOT believe that I actually found this in a used music store here in Tennessee of all places! It was just meant for me to have it! Very Happy
