Best gig?

Diamond Head : Anamolia Club, Prato, Italy, 18/03/2006

Oh yeah!

This one rocked people! Twisted Evil
Weissheim

Best one for me was my first - Glasgow Apollo on the Borrowed Time tour. I'd heard the Reading set on the Tommy Vance Friday Rock Show and had been fairly impressed. I hadn't known much about DH before that. I'd seen the references in the music press - "the natural successors to Led Zeppelin" and had thought they were a bit arrogant. Smile
Bought the album soon after and played it to death.

The gig was awesome. The Am I Evil intro - Brian with the white Flying V, wreathed in dry ice. The sheer power of the original four-piece has never been matched, although they've still produced some magical gigs since.

Tank (support band) were dreadful. Smile

The white flying V

Saw them play in Milton Keynes recently and was well happy wen Brian came out with the white flying V again!

That in my opinion is THE guitar!

Ok, now I'm officially jealous. But naturally I would be jealous of anyone who's been lucky enough to see Diamond Head live.

I thought I saw some video footage or pictures where Brian was apparently using the flying V again. I was kind of surprised since I've read he thought that guitar was a lot of trouble.

As with Weissheim, my first Diamond Head show was Glasgow Apollo 1982 and it still rates as one of the finest shows I have seen.

Yes Tank were not very good, and if memory serves me they were a late replacement for Twisted Sister who sadly cancelled.

Saw Twisted Sister a couple of years back at the Gods of Metal in Bologna, best act of the day though were Motorhead. Judas Priest kicked ass but had some sound issues.

Who says you can't sing along to the Priest!... Twisted Evil

That was an awesome gig, great seeing the guys before hand too!!!

However, the best DH gig I've been to is the one when they supported Megadeth! Megadeth and Diamond in the same night! Cream your pants stuff. Very Happy

I would have to say that the very first time I saw Diamond Head was the best gig for me. I saw them down in the Bungalow Bar in Paisley and I used to go there and see quite a lot of bands and every time I went there Shoot Out The Lights was playing on the jukebox. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a wee poster saying that DH were playing next week. OMG that was a totally mindblowing concert. I was right at the front of the stage the whole time, right in front of Sean Harris and I don't know about him creaming himself during Sucking My Love but I think I almost did Laughing . I bought the album and the single Shoot out the Lights at that concert and that was me well and truly addicted to the mighty DIAMOND HEAD.

DH in the Bungalow Bar that night would be in my top 5 fav concerts of all time - probably 3rd fav. I've still got a few photos that I took that night - I will need to scan them and show youse them.

I also saw them at the Vic Carriage in Greenock when a Paisley band called Possessor supported them - again another mindblowing concert.

Saw them at the Apollo as well when it was supposed to be Twisted Sister supporting but they cancelled and it ended up with Tank as support. DH were superb as always but I was well pleased as seeing Tank cos I really love Tank and they were brill. Best Tank concert was when I went to Edinburgh and on the bill were TANK, ANGEL WITCH AND GIRLSCHOOL (much awesomeness that night Very Happy ). I just saw Twisted Sister a few months back at Carling Academy - they were fab - but the support band Hanoi Rocks were even more fab!!!!

And I saw DH another time in Glasgow, can't remember the name of the venue but it was near the Apollo I think, you went up quite a few stairs, think it was called the Penthouse or something, its not there anymore, but again, DH rocked like hell.

Rock City 14 Sept 2002

In 1986, late September, I had a ticket to see Metallica at the Birmingham Odeon.. I was sick that day so having seen them the week before decided to not travel and gave up the ticket to a friend.. When they got back I was devastated to hear that Brian had joined James and Kirk on stage to play Am I Evil?.. gutted.. (Not sure if Sean appeared on that occasion) .. and I managed to miss them both by going on the wrong night when they played the NEC a few years later... oh well..

Anyway.. finally when Metallica played Milton Keynes Bowl (1993) with Megadeth and others I got to see Diamond Head live.. not sure its that memorable to be honest.. probably too big a gig but anyway..

Roll on 2002.. Finally Diamond Head were starting to get things together and write some more material etc.. It was September 2002 in the small bar downstairs at Rock City, Nottingham (my home town).. I had the privilege of going to hundreds of gigs over the years all around the world (from Anthrax to ZZTop and It Bites to Slayer) and also quite a few in the down stairs bar at Rock City(Noteably Blind Melon).. There were perhaps only 200 people there but the setting was perfect.

I must say that Diamond Head that night moved me so much I can't describe.. I think it was finally seeing them close and personal, but also Sean's voice.. To this day that gig is my yard stick to which I measure a live band, Janes Addiction came close but I guess its in my top three gigs ever. See review here

Recently I have seen DH in Stourbridge/Birmingham and Stirchley.. I don't make comparisons to the past though.. I like the new material and Nick fits well. Great voice and stage presence.. DH are currently a great live act, one of few I would travel any distance to see..

I must say though.. that night in 2002.. one memorable part of my life..

Hey Diamond Head girl!

If you could scan those pics in and get them up here on the boards that would be great Very Happy

and most importantly.... welcome to the community! Cool
Diamondhead Girl

Thanks for the welcome Lloydie Lloyd. I will scan those photos as soon as I have some free time but hopefully within the next couple of days - I think they are in a box in the loft with some of my other Diamond Head merch. I think it would have been 1980 that I saw DH for the first time in the Bungalow Bar - can't believe it was that long ago - and I can still remember it clearly as if it were just yesterday.

Was really gutted when Diamond Head played at King Tuts last year and I missed them cos I was away on holiday. I very nearly cancelled the holiday to go to the concert but couldn't let my friends down, so just went on the holiday - holiday was excellent but the Diamond Head concert would have been fifty thousand times better.

When are DH coming to play Glasgow again - I NEED TO SEE THEM SOON!!!! and of course I have to show off my denim jacket with the Diamond Head patches on the back Very Happy

Again, I can't help being jealous of those who have had the pleasure of seeing Diamond Head live, especially "back in the day". Well, even the more recent shows. That's awesome, Diamondhead Girl! I'm really looking forward to seeing your pictures.

Ok, I understand it might be hard to play a few dates in North America unless something really extraordinary happens (but I can still dream) ... but Glasgow, it can't be too huge a leap to go play there, come on guys! Wink Laughing

If they...

ever play in mainstream Europe and I am personally hoping Italy next year you are all welcome to come and stay at mine in Parma and we can all go to the shows together.

If they play any gigs in the UK again soon...I am there! Very Happy

Yes, that was the Penthouse. Used to be called Satellite City before that, I think.

I saw DH at the Penthouse too (and Edinburgh Coaster the night before). A bit of a culture shock, with David Williamson's funk bass playing, but they were still great. Got to meet the band backstage at the Penthouse.

I missed them last year at King Tut's due to holidays too, so I can sympathize. Sad
